Resolving Conflict And Controlling Anger

Filed Under (Business Success, Personal Growth, Personal Success, Self Improvement, Small Business) by Kevin Sinclair on 30-08-2007

Conflict resolution is such an important issue that organizations exist, whose sole function is to provide training in conflict resolution. Conflict resolution is about teaching people new ways to work through and resolve disputes that don’t involve violence, and is an immediate priority for many organizations today.

Conflict resolution is being used with increasing frequency to supplement, and in some cases, supplant traditional decision-making processes at all levels of government. Conflict resolution is tricky because from the very beginning it takes setting aside the ego and listening to the other party, which does not usually come naturally to most of us.

Conflict resolution is a very important topic under the key knowledge area of Human Resource Management in Project Management. Conflict resolution is a skill based in good communication practices and an understanding of interpersonal dynamics, therefore, successful implementation of conflict resolution policies and procedures is often contingent on providing supervisors with appropriate training and coaching on the policy, procedures and interpersonal skills.

Stress

Stress happens to all of us — deadlines, conflicting demands, constant interruptions, financial pressures, our kids, other people’s kids, and often the unpredictable actions of the people who work with us who are also suffering from stress. Stress is merely a load on the system — anything that gets our hearts going and our breathing rate up.

Stress, like exercise, can make us stronger if we take it in regular, increasing doses, but if stress is allowed to take over our lives, then it can affect our personal physical health and could even lead to a fatal heart attack.

Many men who batter their wives use anger as an excuse for their abuse, much as they blame alcohol, stress, or other individuals.

Communication in Management

Communication in management is a vital part of running a successful company. Communication involves more than the words that come out of your mouth; good communication in management involves managers talking to their workers on an equal basis and finding out what problems the worker might be experiencing (either personal or to do with them doing their job efficiently), and trying to find a good compromising solution.

Heavy-handed management that doesn’t consider the workers’ problems will inevitably result in a badly run company, low morale, and bad customer relations. Communication enhancement and anger or stress management techniques are often used especially in Japanese firms in order to control anger.

Relationships

The key to a successful relationship lies in communication. Anger destroys relationships, leads to violence against others and ourselves, makes us depressed, and generates chemicals that eat away at us at the cellular level.

For a good relationship, we need to control the effects of anger on our finances, our health, our relationships, our work, the way we drive, the way we react to our children and pets, and the way that we react to authorities, people in customer support areas, Doctors, teachers, etc.

If you need medical attention, GET IT, otherwise you jeopardize your mental health, your physical health, your relationships and your life by your anger. We may not be able to change our mental capacity and personality but everyone can learn good communication skills to improve the way they get along in all relationships, not just marital type ones. Often relationships fall apart due to things people say to each other in anger.

Anger Control

The behavioral skills promoted by anger control include:
Arousal reduction,
Communication enhancement, and
Problem-solving.

Anger control is designed to make the individual more aware of this process and enable him or her to intervene in it. Anger control no doubt contributes to the redirection or reduction of anger and of aggression in many individuals. However, anger control fails to account for the premeditated controlling behaviors associated with abuse.

Anger control is often misrepresented as a quick-fix solution that may endanger battered women. However it tends to consider the abuse from the psychological point of view rather than accept the more uncomfortable task of confronting the economic, social and political injustices that perpetuate the problem. Anger control is possible once you decide you want to control the anger and not let it control you.

Anger Treatment

Cognitive behavioral treatment is sometimes used to try and overcome severe anger in posttraumatic stress disorder cases. The cognitive aspect is therefore emphasized in treatment, as is improved assertiveness and communication skills.

Arousal reduction uses stress management techniques such as progressive relaxation exercises and calming visualizations.

Conclusion

95% of the time, anger makes things worse instead of better. Thus some of the benefits of anger control are:
- You will be able to calmly handle stressful situations that otherwise would put you “over the edge”.
- You’ll be happier and more relaxed at home, at work and whilst driving.
- Your health will improve, as well as your relationships.
- A person you love could have been badly hurt if your anger had got out of control.

In Business, Don’t Take It Too Personal

Filed Under (Business Success, Home Business, Personal Success, Small Business) by Kevin Sinclair on 28-08-2007

You’ve probably heard it said, “business is never personal” or “don’t take it personal, it’s only business”. Many times business matters shouldn’t be taken personal. After all business is only business. Or is it? Not taking things personal can be quite difficult in some situations. Especially when it’s your business and other people are involved.

Many times people start a business together and for good reasons. Each individual has his or her own skills and often, different skill sets complement each other. The same is true of personality types. Some people are more outgoing and would feel more comfortable representing the business to the outside world, whereas a more introverted person would probably prefer to work behind the scenes.

Many companies attribute their success to such a combination of personalities. Sometimes it’s a visionary with a right hand or assistant, where to the outside world there appears to be a clear hierarchy. This doesn’t always have to be the case behind the scenes. In other situations there is a duo that heads the company together as equal partners. In many cases there is a combination of two or more individuals that form the driving force behind the company no matter what the configuration may be.

Often such individuals are far more than just business associates. Many times they start off as good friends. They share a common vision of the future and decide to head off and start a business together. In any business problems and challenges are to be expected, especially when it’s a startup company. In which case they are pretty much guaranteed. However leaping over these hurdles often strengthens the bond between entrepreneurs that have a shared vision and strive for a common goal.

But what happens when the relationship deteriorates? What if personalities start to clash or if visions grow apart. There may come a point where it would be best for all parties concerned to end the relationship. Like any marriage this can be a very difficult process. First of all there is the matter of ownership. If two, or more, people have been running a business together each individual has ownership of the company.

Ending the working relationship would most likely mean that someone would have to give up their share of the business. One way of course would be to buy that person out. However that can be difficult for a number of reasons. First of all you need to assess the value of each individuals share.

Accounting practices can help a great deal but it’s not just money that you’re talking about here. Someone may have invested a substantial part of his or her life and energy into the business. The value of their share of the company can have a high emotional factor. Putting a price on that is not as easy as adding up some numbers on a balance sheet.

Then of course there is always the question of the company’s potential future worth. Asking someone to walk away from a business they believe may one day become a million dollar company would take quite a bit of persuasive power. This can be especially hard if the company isn’t doing too well currently, in which case there may not be sufficient funds for a buyout at all.

A breakup between business partners in such a situation can be extra painful. Consider the situation where one person wants to continue the business while the other is asked to walk away. Business wise this may be completely justified. If somebody isn’t bringing enough value to the table, shouldn’t he or she be eliminated? After all in business it’s all about the bottom line.

When faced with situations like these, words like “Don’t take it personal” fall short. To some people there is almost nothing more personal than their business. They have sacrificed greatly for it to succeed. And it is he or she that has made the business what it is today. Just think of hugely successful businesses like: Microsoft, Dell, GE and Apple. Their success is highly correlated with the strength of personalities of their leaders.

People like: Michael Dell, Bill Gates, Jack Welch and Steve Jobs would never have achieved their current levels of success without taking their businesses personal. It is their business. Look around you for examples that are a bit closer to home. Almost everyone knows an example of a corner store, a grocery or bakery that sets itself apart because of the owner who is running it. That owner makes a difference because he takes his business personal.

When there is more than one owner in a business personal differences can eventually lead to a situation where a breakup is inevitable. When something like that happens it will be hard, if not impossible, for all parties concerned to completely separate personal from business matters. A breakup can have a dramatic effect on someone’s personal life and belief system. Besides when business partners come to the point where they decide to split up trust has often been violated and such a violation is almost always felt as personal.

This human aspect is without a doubt one of the most difficult aspects in business and life in general. Whether you’re dealing with business partners, employees, customers or other stakeholders. If you are in business, especially your own business, there will be times when you will have to make unpopular decisions. You may have to do things that you would rather not do. Nevertheless when it’s necessary, it’s necessary. Don’t worry about letting if affect you every once and a while. Some things ought to be taken personal. Just don’t take it too personal.

How to Create a Content Rich Website

Filed Under (Business Success, Home Business, Internet Marketing, Marketing, Small Business, Web Site Development) by Kevin Sinclair on 26-08-2007

If you have a website and you aren’t worried about having solid, rich content, you are missing out on one of the best tools to create revenue that any website owner could have. Having a content-rich website is a must when it comes to making any money from the web these days; if you don’t have useful content on your site you don’t stand a chance to have solid revenue coming in from your site and who couldn’t use some extra money?

Article writing is one of the most solid ways of garnering traffic from the web. This can be done either by your hand or by hiring a ghostwriter to write the articles for you. This is more of an accepted practice than it seems, as not everybody has the ability to be a master writer and that is okay. After all, it is important to write articles because you want to establish yourself as an expert in your field and if your articles display a lack of writing ability that can definitely ruin your chances of being regarded as an expert.

Also, if you are going to have a content rich website that matters, you have to make sure that your writing is targeted toward a specific audience, and that it is that specific audience that is going to be going to and using your website. Create the type of website that your audience will want to bookmark. You can only do this by finding a niche and sticking to it, and catering either to a specific audience or everybody.

The only way that a person can create a content rich website is to do the research. Use research tools like overture to find out what keywords people are hitting up in search of information pertaining to your niche and make sure that you make use of the appropriate keywords when it comes to your content. Without keyword rich content, you can only hope that word of your site reaches the world by word of mouth, because when it comes time to use search engines most users will have no idea that you exist.

You can also drive traffic to your site by using the same search engine optimization techniques to create content for the article directories. Article directories are important because they gain valuable backlink traffic to your site, and people will move from the article to the site with ease. This is an excellent and cost effective way of helping to drive website traffic to your site, because most article directories are free and if you have time, there are tons and tons of directories that you can submit articles to. As a matter of fact, some services will even distribute your articles to the directories for you, so you won’t have to worry about having to go through the trouble.

No matter how you use your article content or whether you choose to do it yourself or hire a ghostwriter, there are certain things that a content rich website should and should not include in order to be the most effective for its intended use just as there is a certain way to go about it.

First of all, make sure to write in short, concise sentences that any reader can easily understand without having to decipher through a million and one punctuation marks. Use words that people all over can understand and try to keep it free of slang or words that only appeal to people from a certain area of the world or United States; unless they are pertinent to the particular audience you are looking to get the attention of.

Also, if you want to keep your reader moving through your article, be sure to write in short paragraphs of just a few sentences and include as many lists, headings, and bulleted points as you can; this gets the attention of the reader the most and makes your content jump out and matter.

Creating rich content for your website is what is going to matter in the end. Colorful pictures and a real purpose are great, but rich content that gets traffic is key to the success of any type of website out there. Be sure to make your content as rich as it can be, and you will find that you have more traffic than you ever thought possible.

Tips To Reduce Stress Each Day

Filed Under (Personal Growth, Personal Success, Self Improvement) by Kevin Sinclair on 23-08-2007

Daily stress can affect your health. It has been proven that those who don’t find ways to lower their stress can develop stress-related illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure and depression.

If you have been feeling overwhelmed in your daily life because of financial, relationship or health issues that seem insurmountable then you need to find ways to cope so that you can lead a healthful life.

The first symptom of daily stress is depression. People who are feeling stress often become anxious, depressed, and find quick fixes to overcome their anxiety. Some quick fixes include food binges, either sleeping too much or sleeping too little, anger, overreacting to situations and excessive mood swings.

Isn’t it true that their is nothing more important than your health? Those who forget to eat often wind up feeling depressed. It is important to eat at least two meals daily as this gives your body some substance to create energy and this helps your body to function.

It is easy to binge on food but then you have made your body uncomfortable and usually binging makes you feel bloated and excessively tired. It is important to try and keep a balance on what you eat. Balance is the key to good health.

Stress can cause excessive mood swings. This might happen at work, someone has done something that is upsetting and you might react by becoming depressed and your first reaction might be to express this feeling by breaking down into tears. This is the reaction we have when we are facing a problem we might need some help with in order to resolve the current issues at hand.

If you are feeling depressed and tearful the first action you should take is to drink a lot of water. Lack of water can be a factor in memory loss and becoming excessively emotional. Drink at least 6-7 glasses of water each day.

The second action you should take is to get up and move to another location. Take a bathroom break or take a walk outside for a few minutes if you are at work. It is important to move to different surroundings for a few minutes. This is because our mind associates memories by our location, what we are seeing, and by what we are feeling. The best action we can do is to create a different mindset by moving to a different location so that we can absorb different mental and physical energies.

Daily stress often leaves us unable to communicate our feelings to those around us. Not being able to communicate when you are feeling mad or sad is a sure sign that you are feeling hidden anger. It is easier to walk away from the problems at hand rather than to express our anger. To communicate our feelings means we have to acknowledge that there is a problem we cannot or would rather not solve.

The decisions you make at this junction may be important in regards to lowering your stress level. If you take care of the problem and find a way to solve the problem then you no longer have to think or deal with it. If you cannot find a solution then you need to find ways to lower your stress level because every time you think of an unsolved problem it takes away from the other problems you have to deal with.

It is better to start with problems you can easily solve and come back to the problems you cannot solve right away. If you cannot find a quick solution then take a break, walk away from the problem and come back later. Sometimes it just takes time to solve a problem and other times you might have to put some distance between you and the problem.

It is important to give yourself some rewards for living. Life can be a celebration. We can celebrate life by looking closer at the colors that are in our environment. You can enjoy a rose’s scent as well as it’s colorful beauty. You can enjoy the sound of a seagull as well as your favorite music. Life is short and the best advice for lowering the stress in your life is to live in the present, not in the past or future.

“Yesterday’s in the past and tomorrow’s in the future. Today is a gift - which is why they call it a present.”
