Blogging - Some Thoughts For The Beginner

Filed Under (Business Success, Home Business, Info Publishing, Internet Marketing, Web Site Development) by Kevin Sinclair on 31-07-2007

The derivation of the word blog comes from web logging, as it used to be known. It has changed a lot in its development and now blogging is a front line tool in the Internet promotion tool box. It is now used to promote products and services and presents another platform to to communicate with the visitor and develop a lasting relationship with them.

Having created the the business blog you can then monetize it as well as personalize it to your own requirements. Once created, you can make money out of the blog by syndicating it through RSS to your business website. If you have decided that you will set up a blog for business, below are a few tips on how to make it one of the more interesting and popular blogs.

1 - Your audience.

You are writing your blog post for your audience to read, so don’t forget that what you write is of interest to them. They have searched for through a keyword, or keyword phrase, and arrived at your blog. So, make sure they are happy with what they find and even interested enough to look a little further into your blog, and maybe visit your website.

2 - Words fail - see sketch.

A large block of text can become very boring when reading, especially online. A picture or graphic or two placed within the text breaks up the strict framework of the post and keeps the reader interested through to the end. It is especially true if the picture is relevant to the subject of the post.

3 - The content needs to be relevant.

The posts made to your business blog need to be relevant to the subject of the blog. In other words the blog is set up around your niche market and with keywords and keyword phrases that are relevant to the subject. The intent is to draw traffic to your blog based on those keywords and keyword phrases. The business blog needs to create a special relationship with its visitors with the aim to sell products or services/ If you consistently write good quality posts to your blog the visitor will return for more of the “good stuff”, and will eventually trust that you know what you are talking about and buy one of your recommended products or services.

4 - Keep things simple.

The art of good communication is to keep things simple. Keep away from the technical jargon unless absolutely necessary and try to keep the sentences short and to the point.

5 - Make it interactive.

Audio and video are very good interactive methods, but all blogs come with a “comments” facility for each post made. Make sure that this feature is not turned off, and all comments must be approved before publishing them.

Before starting out with your blog you will need to do some pre-planning as to how you will personalize and monetize the blog, as well as how often you will post to it. An important fact to resolve is where will the content for each post come from. A good business blog needs a steady stream of interesting and relevant content in order to become a profitable venture - how will you complete this task? Remember that no plan is a plan to failure.

How Small Businesses Waste Money

Filed Under (Business Success, Home Business, Small Business) by Kevin Sinclair on 29-07-2007

Most business owners subscribe to the thought that you “must spend money to make money”. This can be true, but you also must know exactly where that money is going and the results it brings. A small business owner never has any money to waste.

Some ways that your business might waste money includes the following:

1. Manage your credit cards - If you have several cards, develop a computer program that will show you the exact balances, due dates, and the interest rate you are paying. Always be aware of other solicitations that save you money and possibly change your balances over to a new company. If you have any employee cards, see if you can set a limit on them. If not with the credit card company, make sure that the employees know their limits. Manage your credit cards wisely and never, ever miss a due date.

2. Develop an annual plan so you know where you will spend money. This helps you in several ways. The business person will be aware of what portion of the profits are going to advertising, towards incentives, towards accounting and other internal expenses, etc.

3. Do not over-purchase any products or services for a business. If you buy in bulk, the money is tied up and a place must be provided to keep the extras and that might be costing money not needed to be spent.

4. Developing an advertising budget and knowing just what resources to use is key to keeping money under control in a small business. You must advertise, but you also must get value for your money or you will soon be out of business. Keep a record of how much is spent, can you get payment terms, when is the most efficient time to advertise your particular product or service to get the most value for the dollar. Every dollar must be accounted for in advertising because the lifeline of your business depends on new and paying customers. Advertising is the way to get the word out to the community or the internet.

5. A small business owner will sometimes be under self-induced stress to manage all aspects of the business. Sometimes, leaving the control and decisions to others that are qualified is the best way to manage the business. Releasing control may be hard to do sometimes, but in a lot of businesses, money can be wasted because the owner cannot possibly be as efficient as the person who has studied or is knowledgeable about a particular field. For instance, if a business owner does not know accounting, many mistakes in reporting income and taxes can be made. A qualified accountant can possibly save more than the cost of their services in reduced taxes.

Take a hard look around your business and do not let anything be set in stone if saving money is the goal. Challenge everything that will cost money and see what can be done to change the situation. Any money that is saved, is money that can be put back into the business either in profits or in growth.

A business owner wants their business to be successful and will work hard to sustain growth. A business owner wants a way to continue making and growing money from a product or service that is interesting to them. After growing a business and being smart with cash flow, many business owners will sell their businesses only to start another business.

The reason is that business owners are independent types and challenges are rewarding when met and faced. Saving money through every day operations will help the business owner to meet their financial and emotional goals.

Applying The Power Of Gratitude

Filed Under (Personal Growth, Personal Success, Self Improvement) by Kevin Sinclair on 26-07-2007

This prayer of gratitude was found on a scrap of paper in a rancid dormitory at the liberation of Ravensbruck Concentration Camp in Germany at the end of World War II.

“Lord, remember not only the men of good will, but also those of ill will. But do not remember all the suffering they have inflicted upon us. Remember rather the fruits we have brought, thanks to this suffering: our comradeship, our loyalty, our humility, the courage, the generosity, the greatness of heart that has grown out of this. And when they come to judgment, let all the fruits we have bourne be their forgiveness.”

The Power of Gratitude is an extremely important aspect of attracting to you the abundance and happiness that you desire and deserve in your life.

How is it that gratitude can affect the life experiences that you encounter from day to day? The power of gratitude works on the brain. It is a useful approach to lifting the spirit to a higher frequency where deep and lasting happiness can occur.

There is a very simple reason why most spiritual traditions suggest that when praying we give thanks for what we already have rather than ask for what we do not have. The power of gratitude and the vibration it creates within us always attracts more good things to us. You were guided here to learn how the power of gratitude will transform your life into a dream come true.

There is a wonderful Hasidie parable about the power of gratitude to change the course of our destiny in a heartbeat. This is the speed it takes for a “thank you” to reach Heaven’s ears.

Apply the power of gratitude to supercharge your success. You can do this by consciously training yourself to notice everything you have to be grateful for and by doing so, tap into the power of gratitude.

Gratitude is often overlooked and seldom ever considered to be an important aspect of re-programming your subconscious for success. Did you know that all the scientific reports that you read and hear about where folks excel after they adopted an attitude where gratitude was part of their everyday life or started to keep a Gratitude Journal are further testaments to the power of gratitude? Being grateful and seeing situations (good or “bad”) as a blessing brings more joy and happiness into your life.

When you are thankful for something, no matter how small it is, you are initiating the Law of Attraction to get even more of what you want and deserve. Watch how the power of gratitude works to create peace, beauty and joy in your life. The most powerful attitude we can ever have is the attitude of gratitude.

By learning to appreciate what you have, you increase your ability to harvest the abundance of God’s blessings. When you are able to fully develop that awareness, (and with a little practice, you will) not only is it an extremely freeing experience, but you are setting yourself up for a much greater flow of abundance and happiness being attracted to and coming into your life. The Universal Laws which govern everything in life are in place and you only need to learn to operate in harmony with them. When you do, it will allow you to attract the abundance and happiness that you desire.

Grow Your Profits With Continuous Process Improvement

Filed Under (Business Success, Home Business, Small Business) by Kevin Sinclair on 24-07-2007

Continuous process improvement is a systematic approach to achieve both incremental and breakthrough improvements in processes. This results in effective, better and more efficient ways in producing products or services.

Why is continuous process improvement important? The world is changing daily. If you do not keep up with the changes that are happening, you will soon find that you will not be able to keep up with the competition either.

By using continuous process improvement methods and techniques, you can determine if your business activities are the way to serve both your customers and organization.

However, you must realize that this is not a one time effort. If you want to achieve total customer satisfaction and increased sales, then continuous process improvement must be an ongoing initiative. It must become a way of life. Systematic application of continuous process improvement methods will result in it becoming second nature.

The key steps are
- Select
- Analyze
- Measure
- Improve
- Evaluate

1. Select

It is important to select the process that needs improvement. Choosing one that is already working well is a waste of time and money.

The process you choose should also be one that is important to meeting customers’ wants and needs and also be one that is critical to achieving your organization’s goals.

2. Analyze

You now need to understand how the process currently works and analyze it. This will require you to document the process as it is currently practised. This is also known as the “as is” process.

Identify all the process tasks and create a process flowchart. This will provide a visual drawing to help you to identify tasks that may not be adding value.

You will then need to decide what are the processes you want to measure.

3. Measure

Measurement is key to process improvement. If you cannot measure, you cannot manage effectively.

An initial baseline performance level must be established first. Then continue to measure the process. Only then can you determine if any improvement has happened.

Gathering baseline data is important as what you think it is and what it actually is can be quite different.

The process performance gaps need to be identified next. Non-value added tasks are an example. You will be able to identify other problem areas by reviewing your process flowchart.

Common problem areas are poor communication, lack of training, use of outdated processes, unclear responsibilities, lack of clear procedures, insufficient delegation of authority to operations personnel and lack of management availability to make key decisions.

4. Improve

Process goals must be set to increase the probability of success. Achieving goals also provides encouragement for the team and acts as a measure for management to recognize employee achievement.

By its very definition to achieve continuous process improvement, goals must be set and work must be done to meet them. Then set higher goals and continually improve on the way work is done to achieve them.

You need to find improvement needs based on the performance gaps that you would have uncovered earlier. Confirm desired process performance levels based on your customer needs. You must also decide on any supplier prerequisites to be able to meet these targets.

Now look back at your earlier analysis to identify the root causes of the process problems. Identify opportunities to streamline and modify the process. You can redesign the process to be more efficient by eliminating or simplifying steps. Or you can also modify steps within the process.

There will be a number of ideas that you might get. Decide on the best one depending on the impact it will have, the amount of funds that you have, the skills required and the resources it will require.

Get back to your original flowchart and note the changes you have made. This will give a clearer picture of how your changes will impact your process.

It is better to test your solutions and see if they work well. If you get good results, you can then go ahead and implement the changes.

It is important that data is gathered on all key process measures. This is the best way to determine if your process changes are resulting in improvements. If necessary, you may need to add new process measures.

5. Evaluate

It may seem that you have achieved process improvement, but your job is not done until you get all the data and feedback for use in evaluating the outcome.

This step is necessary to ensure that the root causes of your process problems are reduced or eliminated. You also need to confirm that your customer needs are satisfied.

Once you are satisfied that your initial efforts have been successful, it is now time to standardize it and monitor the ongoing improvement. This step is crucial to ensure that people do not return to their old way of doing things.

It is now time to communicate the improved process flow and documented procedures. Training on the improved processes need to be conducted if required. Importantly, data must continually be collected to measure and monitor to ensure that the improved process is maintained and if possible improved.

Once a changed process has been put in place, there is the question of when to disband the team. It is best to maintain the team till a point when the improved process has been well established and has become second nature to the people handling them.
